Background: Hisoka's lineage dates back to the Kamakura era (1185 - 1333). If he had lived, he would've carried on the 17th generation. He was raised into a very traditional and old-fashioned family. When they discovered his gift of Empathy, they were unable to cope and would lock him down in the basement on several occasions. Rather than proud of their son's unique abilities, they feared him for being different.

Hisoka was trained as a bushi (warrior), meaning he was trained in a variety of martial arts, including kendo, aikido, kyudo, naginata and judo.

When he was thirteen, the boy happened upon Muraki Kazutaka murdering a woman. Instead of just killing him then and there, Muraki sexually abused Hisoka, placed a curse on him, and erased his memory of that night. For three years Muraki's curse tortured Hisoka, rendering him helpless, before he finally died at the age of sixteen. His death cause was stated to have been an 'incurable disease'.

Hisoka has a permenent and physical curse upon him; because of Muraki, he has red tattoo designs running all around his upper body and arms. Even in death, Muraki's curse continues to haunt Hisoka. The red markings will not disappear until Muraki is dead (this is how Hisoka knows Muraki is alive).

His purpose of becoming a Shinigami was to reveal the secrets of his death, then seek revenge on his murderer. He is Tsuzuki's supporting character and is making great strives to learn Fuda magic, so that he may become Tsuzuki's equal.
